Automaker's Pre-Owned Sales Have Risen by 260 Percent Since 2010

The auto industry saw its certified pre-owned (CPO) sales surge in 2013, rising by 15 percent year-over-year on average, but Mazda's numbers were even more impressive. Totaling 37,886 units, the Japanese automaker's CPO sales jumped by 39 percent last year compared to 2012, helping its CPO market share increase by 0.3 percent to 1.8 percent. Mazda has now experienced four straight years of record CPO growth, with its sales swelling by 260 percent since 2010.

Mazda cited recent improvements to its CPO program as a significant factor in its sales success. Last September, the auto brand began giving its CPO customers an additional 12-month/12,000-mile warranty while also extending CPO vehicle eligibility by a year, covering six years before the current model year. The CPO mileage limit was also increased by 20,000 miles to a maximum of 80,000 miles. In 2012, Mazda launched an AutoCheck Buyback Protection program, which provides owners with three years of protection against major title problems found with their CPO vehicle, including 110 percent of its NADAguides.com published retail value and up to $500 in aftermarket accessories.

"The upgrades to Mazda's CPO program in the past few years have certainly helped sales, but those benefits would be too costly for the automaker if it didn't already make vehicles that are built to last for years without major problems," said Barry Chew, sales manager of Mastria Mazda, a certified pre-owned Mazda dealer in Raynham, Mass. "It's Mazda's reputation for reliability and value that really gives buyers the confidence to invest in one of the brand's pre-owned vehicles, and that keeps improving with each new model year."

Kiplinger's Personal Finance recently honored three Mazda models for the cost savings they offer buyers, recognizing the 2014 Mazda3, Mazda6 and Mazda CX-5 with Best Value Awards. Judged on factors like residual value, fuel economy, performance and safety, the 2014 Mazda3 i Sport and Mazda6 i Sport topped the Best New Car Under $20,000 and Best New Car $20,000 - $25,000 categories, respectively, while the 2014 Mazda CX-5 Touring was named Best in Class – Small Crossover. The Mazda3 compact car and Mazda6 midsize sedan were completely redesigned for the 2014 model year with a full suite of fuel-saving SKYACTIV technologies, while the CX-5 was the first Mazda to fully embrace SKYACTIV when it debuted for the 2013 model year.
