Lexus IS and GX Achieve Triple-Digit Year-Over-Year Gains

Lexus' push for a more aggressively styled lineup continued to pay dividends in May, as a handful of recently redesigned or significantly updated vehicles helped the luxury auto brand's U.S. sales increase by 21 percent compared to the same month last year. Leading the charge were the redesigned-for-2014 Lexus IS sport sedan and the refreshed-for-2014 Lexus GX midsize SUV, which each saw triple-digit sales gains last month.

The Lexus IS moved 4,403 units in the United States in May, an impressive 132 percent jump year-over-year, while sales of the Lexus GX rose by 163 percent, with 1,958 models finding new homes. For the 2014 model year, the Lexus IS received the brand's new signature spindle grille and sharp design lines, as well as a stiffer body, a new multilink rear suspension and selectable drive modes to match its sportier exterior. On the other hand, the 2014 Lexus GX was outfitted with new standard features -- like trailer sway control and a display audio with an eight-inch touchscreen and backup camera -- while also donning a spindle grille.

"Every time Lexus has equipped one of its vehicles with bolder styling and improved driving dynamics, that model has gotten a big sales boost, so it's clear that the brand's riskier design approach is resonating with buyers," said Vincent Liuzzi, general manager of Lexus of Watertown, a Lexus dealer in Boston. "Of course, drivers also know they'll still benefit from the industry-leading reliability and advanced in-car technology that has always come with a Lexus, so that helps to seal the deal."

Another top-performing model in May was the Lexus CT 200h hybrid, which was also updated for the 2014 model year with a spindle grille, a new solid-black roof for its F SPORT trim and a newly available multimedia system that is designed to be more intuitive. Moving 1,762 units last month, the Lexus CT saw a 9 percent sales increase compared to May 2013. Meanwhile, the brand's volume-leading car, the Lexus ES, remains popular following its redesign for the 2013 model year, selling 6,523 units in May for an 11 percent surge year-over-year.
