The city of Camden, New Jersey is located in Camden County, just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is the 12th largest city in New Jersey, with a population of 77,344. Camden, the county seat of Camden County, consists of over twenty different neighborhoods and is home to major tourist attractions like the BB&T Pavilion, the USS New Jersey, Campbell’s Field, and the Adventure Aquarium. It is just five miles southeast of Philadelphia and about 100 miles southwest of New York City.
While Camden is a destination for tourists and sports fans, it is also plagued with drug abuse, addiction, and a high crime rate. In fact, as recently as 2012, Camden had the highest crime rate in the country with 2,566 violent crimes per every 100,000 people. That rate is over six and a half times greater than the national average of 387. In 2015, Camden was named “Apocalypse, NJ” in an issue of Rolling Stone Magazine because there were more than 500 cases of heroin abuse reported.
According to the Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services in the New Jersey Department of Human Services, Camden accounts for over one-third of Camden County’s admissions into drug and alcohol addiction treatment facilities. The primary reason for these admissions is opioids followed by marijuana and alcohol, in both 2015 and 2016. While the overall admissions cases for both years have stayed consistent, there was a major uptick in opioid addiction admissions, from 659 cases in 2015 to 975 cases in 2016.
