While Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) rates continue to rise despite social distancing, one organization is doing all it can to detect STD infections online using social monitoring software. STDReporting.com began monitoring social media activity this past fall looking for statements indicating that someone has admitted to having or has accused someone else of having a STD.
In recent months the STD Monitoring Project has detected over 1,500 Tweets, Facebook posts, and YouTube videos posted by users unaware that if they say certain things their posts might be archived as possible indicators of STD infections. Statements like “I have herpes,” “he has HIV,” and “gave me genital warts” are copied, turned into blog posts, and listed online where users can easily search for people they know to see if they have been caught admitting that they have Genital Herpes, HPV, Genital Warts, Hepatitis C, HIV, or AIDS.
STD Reporting is also syndicating content from the International STD Registry which lists thousands of profiles featuring individuals known to have incurable STDs. This allows concerned members of the public to contribute to STD Reporting directly by submitting reports to the STD Registry website. Soon, STD Reporting plans to add a feature that will allow anyone to remove syndicated content from its STD Registry section with the click of a button if the source URL for the STD report dies. This will assure that any content removed from the STD Registry can also be easily removed from STD Reporting.
Finally, STD Reporting has launched a STD News service that searches mainstream news outlets, government websites, and authoritative blogs for the latest news about STDs. The results are then curated and re-published several times a day as new content is discovered. This process mutually beneficial for news sources and STD Reporting alike because every story contains source attribution links that reward sources with referral traffic as well as better search engine rankings.
These upgrades come on the eve of STD Awareness Week. STD Awareness Week is a week set aside by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to raise awareness about STDs with the hopes of encouraging people to get tested, seek treatment, and do more to prevent the spread of STDs.
