In every relationship there are ebbs and flows, and learning how to communicate and power through difficult times is essential. As Joseph Gish will tell you, working through the hard will build a strong base for a relationship and make it even stronger.
Gish married his wife Julie, leaving the US to go to China to be with her after they had met for just 6 days in Barcelona. Along the way, they have dealt with many issues stemming everywhere from simple relationship trouble to extreme variance in cultural understanding. However, they have made it past all the challenges that they have faced and now enjoy an extremely strong bond.
The route to finding true love is never easy, but with the right mindset and mentality, it will come eventually, says Gish.
“It is not easy to find the right one, but if you are diligent, set boundaries and know what you want, you will be able to find the right one eventually,” Gish said.
When things are not going well, it is important to evaluate your relationship and look at what isn’t working and why you got into it in the first place, according to Gish.
“When you find yourself in trouble in a relationship, it is important to think to yourself. ‘Why am I with this person in the first place’, if the answer to that question is just that it is convenient or that you want somebody to be with, you probably shouldn’t be with that person in the first place,” Gish said. “If you also find that you don’t trust your partner or cannot communicate or negotiate with them, then it will be very hard to reconcile that relationship.”
Gish says that the most important thing is to know what you want out of the get go, rather than simply finding it along the way.
“A lot of people get into relationships because they want to have someone and think that they will figure it out later, but that usually doesn’t work,” Gish said. “One of my wife’s friends was complaining how she could never find the right guy, so I asked her what her standards were and she didn’t have anything other than she just wanted to find a man. We told her that she needed to know what she was looking for and it would come eventually.”
