Eastern Michigan University researcher works to get professionals anti-bias training - MLive.com

Training against racist behavior is at the core of Gersh's work.

The initiative, which she calls the One Love Symposium, aims to train professionals who make high-impact decisions for our society, such as doctors, teachers and police officers.

Gersh, who is white, was assisted by six minors - three Black and three white - to develop the traits that make up an effective "Human Services Professional." This term is Gersh's label for the high-impact workers people interact with every day - the doctors, teachers and police officers.

Due to the high volume of one-on-one interaction with people, Gersh and the group knew it was vital that the human services professionals express non-discriminatory behavior, she said.

The symposium aims to improve that training by turning it into a work certificate that motivates people to pursue professional learning as a way towards promotability.

The writing sample can be as simple as a grocery list, Gersh said, or as complicated as a typical persuasive essay.

At the end of the day, Gersh understands the route of educating people against biases is a long and often immediately unsatisfying one.
