PORTLAND (WGME) -- Kids got the chance to shop with officers from the Portland Police Department Friday through the annual "Shop with a Cop" event.
The Portland Police Department has been doing this for the last 15 years.
Renys was packed as kids made their way through the aisles to pick out the perfect gifts.
This year, the Portland Police Department shopped with 20 kids for the annual Shop with a Cop.
The kids were chosen based on their written responses in an essay writing contest.
Kids shopped for themselves, other friends, family members and even strangers they sponsored.
The children walked around with baskets in hand, loading them up with toys.
Ten players with the Maine Celtics also helped the kids shop. The officers say they love seeing how excited the kids get.
“It’s my favorite event of the year,” Portland Police Youth Services Officer Coreena Behnke said. “Just to see a look on the face and to build the relationship with kids and to show the human side to the police officers.”
Afterwards, the kids wrapped all the presents they bought and enjoyed some pizza.
