Former CRB teacher returns to class for “Know Your Constitution” - Carroll Daily Times Herald

Former CRB teacher Wayne Herman, who taught high school social studies at Coon Rapids-Bayard for 34 years, visited the current Junior and Senior government classes last Friday for the first time in more than a decade.

He came to promote the “Know Your Constitution” contest, an academic endeavor sponsored annually by the Iowa State Bar Association. When he was a teacher, he used to encourage his government students to participate in the contest.

“It felt like old times today,” said Herman, whose no-nonsense but compassionate teaching style made a positive impact on hundreds of CRB students from 1975 to 2009.

Recently Herman admitted he has some real concern about the longevity of the US Constitution. In operation since 1789, the Constitution is the world’s longest surviving written charter of government. But Herman says there’s a growing sense that the political system is broken and that the moment may be critical.

“We’re tearing ourselves apart,” Herman reflected. “Instead of being a community, we’re against one another. The political parties are not putting America first, they are putting their party allegiances and preferences ahead of citizens.”

“Instead of being a community,” Herman said “we’re against one another. It’s baffling that we don’t listen to one another with respect, and if somebody has a different opinion, we categorize them as the enemy....A country that is at itself and going against one another is in trouble,” Herman continued.
