A junior at William Floyd High School earned a second place award in Optimum’s Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest, the school district announced this week.

Kimberlyn David received an iPad for her achievement and was recognized Wednesday during a virtual ceremony. Entrants in the essay contest that was sponsored by Univision were tasked with writing about a Hispanic or Latino/Latina person, past or present, who they consider to be a hero.

David’s essay was a short story about her grandfather, Lewis Cruz. She called it “His Spirit Lives Inside the Firefly” and used it to demonstrate why he has been such an inspiration to her.

“Kim’s commitment to excellence in writing is admirable,” said Jessica Vultaggio, David’s English class teacher.

The Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest was open to middle and high school students who live in an area where Optimum services are available.
