In this respect, Guergachi argues that the most pressing existential threat to modern society is not climate change but rather the current mindset and approaches we tend to adopt to tackle challenges. We have this tendency to develop expertise in a particular area, then entrench ourselves in this area and enjoy the comfort of knowing (almost) everything about that area. Such an approach to Science has worked well during the decades that followed the Renaissance period. Still, now that most burning questions keep emerging at the boundaries among disciplines, it has become detrimental to human progress.
Interdisciplinary Research makes this easier because you can build around a topic and explore it from various aspects, like building up a hill instead of a ladder. The advantage of a mountain is that it makes it easier to climb in terms of knowledge and disseminate that knowledge over various interconnected domains. It’s possible to see the advantages of interdisciplinary learning if you apply this strategy to different disciplines.
Aziz Guergachi’s research agenda holistically addresses the dilemmas underlying the profit-people-planet triple-bottom accounting framework. In contrast, most academics focus on one specified discipline and one topic, restricting the big picture.
