Light Lounge, a Colorado-based provider of light therapy and equipment, has launched the Light Pod L3, an innovative full-body light pod that makes the technology accessible and affordable to more people, allowing them to reap the benefits of the therapy, which has been found to help reduce pain, improve mood, and stimulate the body's natural healing processes.

Light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation or low-level laser therapy. This light is beneath the UV spectrum, with a wavelength between 600 and 940 nanometers, both nearfield and infrared.

The therapy has been found in multiple clinical studies to help reduce inflammation, which is a component of many disorders related to aging and mental health. Photobiomodulation stimulates the mitochondria within the body's cells to produce more adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the currency of intracellular energy transfer in almost all forms of life and it promotes tissue repair and limits the inflammatory response. There have also been studies suggesting that depression is linked to mitochondrial dysfunction in the body's cells.

According to Light Lounge Founder and CEO David T. Martin, light therapy has been the subject of numerous research studies since the 1960s, and this has led to the creation of machines that use “cold lasers” to apply that light to localized portions of the body. Laser technology is extremely expensive and complicated to manufacture, which restricted the applications of photobiomodulation in the past. However, advancements in light-emitting diode (LED) technology have allowed LEDs to replicate the irradiance of lasers to the point where they can be applied to the whole body.

“The Light Pod L3 exists because LED is now capable of approaching the same irradiance as laser, without the associated dangers to the human body. Aside from being safe for people of all ages, LEDs are also much cheaper to manufacture, allowing us to distribute the technology and allow more people to access it.”

Martin says whole-body light therapy stimulates the body's natural capacity for self-healing by allowing the mitochondria, which are present in all of the body's cells, to respirate more thoroughly. This process usually declines as a person ages, so he says light therapy can help relieve some symptoms of aging, such as joint pain, and provides better sleep.

“With depression being linked to mitochondrial disorders, we believe that this technology could help many psychologists and psychiatrists as complementary treatments for mental conditions such as depression. It has no side effects, and it has no drug interactions, which can help medical professionals reduce the amount of prescribed medications. In fact, we had it approved as an opioid alternative in 2017, which can help address the opioid addiction crisis.”

Light Lounge has been working closely with medical doctors and insurance companies to create prescribed care with light therapy, which they have named ‘lightraceuticals’. Their efforts are seeing that many insurance companies will reimburse their customers for this preventive care.

According to Martin, the Light Pod L3 costs $150,000, which is much lower than previous laser-based technology. Light Lounge has sold 24 franchise locations with hopes of having over two hundred franchise locations in the next five years. He adds that customers can purchase memberships at Light Lounge, which allows them access to the Light Pod for one session per day, for less than the price of a cup of coffee.

“Light Lounge has come up with a really disruptive technology and business model. Not everyone can afford having an L3 at home. So, I salute our franchisees, the people that are putting more Light Lounge studios up, because they're the real heroes here by making the technology more available to everyone. We believe that such groundbreaking and revolutionary therapy should not be priced out of reach of the average American, that's why we are working to lower costs, as part of the legacy we want to leave for the next generation.”
