Utopian Brewing, a U.K. based craft brewery, has reached a monumental milestone in brewing 6,500 hectoliters (HL) in just one year, which is approximately six times higher than the average for small breweries in the U.K.
The brewery is on track to produce 8,000 HL in 2024 with that number expected to continue increasing in the coming years. According to Richard Archer, Managing Director of Utopian Brewing, producing the high volume of craft beer is enabling them to lower their costs of manufacturing which in turn lowers the price for retailers and consumers of the craft beer.
Utopian Brewing has faced many challenges since the company’s founding in 2019. During the first year the brewery was in operation the COVID19 Pandemic was at its height. Archer says the lockdowns and supply chain issues caused the craft beer industry to lose a lot of money and many small breweries to shut down. Utopian Brewing was able to persevere through the pandemic and is now supplying their craft beer, which is made with natural ingredients, to pubs throughout the United Kingdom. In addition to supplying local pubs, Utopian Brewing is in talks with large retailers and supermarkets to have their craft beer sold in those stores.
Archer says the brewery appeals to a broad audience and craft beer enthusiasts because of the company’s approach to brewing which mixes traditional British ingredients and traditional Bavarian brewing methods. Utopian Brewing aims to attract people who drink traditional beers produced by large brands and show them that craft beer is affordable and accessible.
Currently, the brewery has fulfilled large orders for over 30,000 cans of craft beer at a time, which is another important milestone for a small company like Utopian Brewery. To fulfill larger orders and reach more milestones, Utopian Brewery aims to show they can successfully export their craft beer to larger markets throughout Europe. They already have sold their beer to retailers in Sweden and France, and have received interest from buyers in Norway.
When Utopian Brewing was in its founding stages the company started a crowdfunding campaign. The crowdfund generated over $500,000 and brought in 200 investors. With the funds and investors contributing to the company the brewery has been able to continue growing and prove there is a growing market for craft beer. Keeping the growth of the brewery as a priority has enabled Utopian Brewing to stay in business and bring their craft beer into new markets.
