In recent years, 360-degree video has emerged as a powerful medium for capturing and sharing immersive experiences. With its ability to transport viewers to different locations and provide a unique perspective, 360 video has gained popularity in fields such as virtual reality, gaming, and even marketing. However, editing 360 video comes with its own set of challenges and requires specialized tools and techniques. In this article, we'll delve into the world of 360 video editing, exploring the video editing software, apps, and techniques that can help you create compelling and immersive content.

What is 360-Degree Video Editing?

360-degree video, also known as immersive video or spherical video, is a type of video that captures a full 360-degree field of view, allowing viewers to explore the scene from any angle. Traditional video editing software is designed for flat, rectangular videos, so editing 360-degree video requires specialized tools that can handle the unique spherical format.

360-degree video editing involves several key processes. First, the raw footage from a 360-degree camera needs to be stitched together to create a seamless panoramic view. This process involves merging multiple video streams to create a single spherical video. Once the stitching is complete, the video can be edited just like any other video, with adjustments to color, sound, transitions, and effects. However, special attention must be paid to maintaining a consistent viewing experience as viewers can freely navigate the video in any direction.

360 Video Editing Software

To edit 360-degree video, you'll need specialized video editor that can handle the unique requirements of spherical video editing. The following takes MiniTool MovieMaker for example to show you how to easily edit a 360-degree video.

Step 1. Get and install MiniTool MovieMaker on your Windows PC.

Step 2. Open this tool to enter its main interface.

Step 3. Click the Import Media Files option under the Media tab to upload your 360-degree video.

Step 4. Drag and drop the uploaded video onto the below timeline on the video track.

Step 5. Then, you can start editing the 360 video on numerous aspects:

  • Split the video: play the playhead on where you would like to separate the video and click the scissors icon on the playhead.
  • Add a transition between two video clips: go to the Transition tab, drag and drop your favorite transition type to the gap between the target video clips.
  • Add an effect to a video clip: click on the video clip on the timeline to select it, switch to the Effect tab from the top-left menu, and click the + (plus) icon on your favorite effect filter.
  • Add a motion to a video clip: the procedure is the same as adding an effect.
  • Add a text to a video clip: use the similar way to add a text mode to the target video clip and specify the text content, format, and location either in the upper-right Text Property section or in the Player section.
  • Add an animated sticker to a video clip: use the same way to add a sticker to a video clip and edit it as you like.
  • Edit the audio of the 360-degree video: if there is an embedded audio for the video, you can fade in or fade out the audio or change its volume (including mute it). You can also add extra music and songs to the video. Upload your favorite music to MiniTool MovieMaker and drag it to the audio track to sync with the video. Or directly use the songs in the Music library under the Media tab.

Besides the above 360 video editing, you can also change the saturation, brightness, contrast, speed, aspect ratio of the video, flip, rotate, or reverse it, add 3D LUT to it, etc.

Step 6. When you complete all settings to the 360-degree video, just click the Export option in the upper right to save the changes.

You are able to specify the format, encoder, resolution, bit rate, frame rate, and so on of the exported video.

Tips for Editing 360-Degree Video

Editing 360-degree video requires a different approach compared to traditional video editing. Here are some tips to help you navigate the unique challenges of working with immersive video content.

  • Understand the viewer's experience: Remember that viewers can look in any direction, so ensure that important elements and actions are happening within the frame at all times. Consider guiding the viewer's attention by using visual cues or sound.
  • Avoid excessive cuts and transitions: Frequent cuts and transitions can disorient viewers in a 360-degree video. Instead, use seamless transitions or creative techniques like fading elements in and out to maintain a smooth viewing experience.
  • Use spatial audio: Spatial audio enhances the immersive experience by providing directional sound cues. Consider using ambisonic or binaural audio techniques to match the visuals and create a more realistic environment.
  • Experiment with effects and graphics: While excessive visual effects can be overwhelming in a 360-degree video, subtle enhancements like color correction and minor graphic elements can help enhance the overall viewing experience. Experiment with effects that complement the immersive nature of the video without overpowering it.
  • Test your edits in a VR headset: To truly understand how your edits will be experienced by viewers, it's recommended to test the content using a virtual reality headset. This allows you to immerse yourself in the video and ensure that the transitions, visuals, and audio work seamlessly together.
