Manuel Astruc, MD, Psychiatrist and Founder of Your Next Act, is coaching entrepreneurs, business owners and individuals in leadership roles to help them overcome the isolation they are struggling with as a result of being in a position of authority, while being overworked and stressed.

As a psychiatrist who created his own coaching practice, Astruc has found there is a stigma directed at entrepreneurs and people holding leadership positions that leads them to feeling like they can’t reach out or express themselves to colleagues. According to Astruc, when people don’t adequately deal with their struggles it can lead to a multitude of negative outcomes taking place in their lives.

Astruc has firsthand knowledge dealing with loneliness and the hardships that come with it. As an entrepreneur, having first hand experience with the overwhelming stress and burnout, with the loss of his twin sister Magdalina, being a turning point. He ‘drew a line in the sand’ and committed to transform himself and create a path to success. Making small but healthy changes in his life, Astruc used his experience and knowledge as a psychiatrist to build the foundations of his coaching practice.

As Astruc began working with entrepreneurs and people in leadership positions he found it is often a lonely lifestyle. When they are experiencing hardships and struggles, they can feel as if there is no outlet or anyone to express themselves to. Instead of reaching out for help they will isolate themselves, which only further complicates the feelings of loneliness and isolation they are dealing with. This demographic of people don’t reach out for help because they want to avoid being seen as weak or inadequate in their role.

When Astruc begins working with entrepreneurs and leaders, he begins by getting to know them on a personal level so he can evaluate the circumstances in their life that are causing them hardships. Astruc then works with his clients to find the deeper causes of their struggles, so together they can develop the best methods to put in place so the entrepreneur or leader can begin living a healthier life. Astruc encourages his clients to cut out all the negative things in their life that don’t contribute to their well being.

In his own experience with loneliness and isolation, Astruc removed negative media and unhealthy foods and began exercising and focusing on healthy habits. He says every individual client is different and he is dedicated to working with them for however long it takes, until they are successful in both professional and personal lives.

Astruc says that society is becoming more open and accepting for people to speak out when they are experiencing mental health issues such as burnout, depression, anxiety and addiction, but the stigma around entrepreneurs and leaders has not yet gone away and society is not as accepting when they try to seek help. To help his entrepreneurs and leaders to get help, and not suffer in silence. This enables entrepreneurs and leaders to be more open with themselves, which is a critical step, admitting you have a problem. Astruc says he usually works with his clients for about two to three months before they start to make real changes and progress.

Astruc has been working with new technologies to develop methods he can implement in his psychiatry practice Manuel Astruc, M.D and Associates. Currently he is using a transcranial magnetic stimulation, which is used to treat depression. He plans to be able to devote more time to his coaching practice as Astruc’s primary focus is still on psychiatry. In the future, Astruc would like to work with elite groups in a small coaching session and develop that into a separate program. He also aims to create workshops and have the chance to conduct public speaking where he can share his own experiences and the practices he utilizes to help people.

“Burnout can be a serious problem that if gone unaddressed can lead to detrimental health problems, or loss of life” says Astruc. “I really want to help more entrepreneurs and leaders overcome their isolation, because I know personally what it can do and how it can begin to destroy a person’s life. I want to build up my coaching practice more so that I can begin to break down the stigma surrounding burnout, depression, anxiety and addiction for entrepreneurs and leaders. Once more people understand the stigma we can start to remove it from society as a whole.”
