Asal Shokati, Ayurvedic practitioner and a certified yoga and meditation teacher, shares how she is using Ayurveda to help people overcome some of the struggles they face in life.

In recent years, humanity has been going through a multitude of large scale changes from the pandemic, constantly evolving technologies and the emergence of conflicts on a global scale. These are just a small number of global changes that affect everyone to some type of degree whether large or small. Asal says one of the issues she sees throughout the world is too much codependence in certain communities while too much independence in others, not allowing us to live life holistically.

Through Ayurveda she works to find the ways in which people can live interdependently in the healthiest way possible. She says there are practices which people can do on a daily basis to help them deal with the realities around them. Part of the Ayurvedic practice she teaches involves embracing oneself with compassion and dedicating time to regroup emotions and begin to understand the connection between the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of life.

One of the key aspects of Ayurveda that Asal uses in her practice is the Kosha system, which focuses on how a person is comprised of 5 different layers through and beyond the physical and energetic bodies. This also includes the mental and emotional layers of life that people deal with on a daily basis. She says the higher Koshas provide access to higher wisdom and bliss. By practicing Ayurveda people can begin to understand how it can bring an awareness to their lives, which can reduce the chances of inflammation and autoimmune diseases.

As an Ayurvedic practitioner and instructor, Asal takes a holistic approach when helping people find balance in their life. One of the focuses she takes is to help people work through past experiences that were traumatic and have led to stressful memories they are trying to suppress. According to Asal, the suppression of traumatic memories can lead to blockage in the flow of life force energy (Prana), which leads to a breakdown in communication between the brain and organs throughout the body.

“When there is a blockage of Prana in the body it can lead to a build up of stress and even worse inflammation and autoimmune diseases because the brain is not able to properly communicate with other parts of the body,” says Asal. “By using guided meditation and understanding the science of Ayurveda my goal is to help people find balance and peace in their lives and I aim to spread awareness on how beneficial Ayurveda can be to communities around the world. When we begin to find balance in our lives it can have a large impact on reducing all the conflict and negativity in the world.”
