In recent years, the expectations placed upon women have been amplified by the insurgence of social media and increased accessibility to cosmetic enhancements. While going through natural changes in hormones, energy levels, and metabolism, women in their forties are becoming increasingly discouraged by the way the world views their naturally maturing bodies. In 2023, Gen X accounted for 35% of cosmetic surgeries in the United States, alone.

For Gen Z and Millenials, resources are readily available and take precedence over news, television, and social media outlets. In the mental health and wellness space, the internet is flooded with inspirational blogs aimed at the young adult reader, whilst articles for women in their forties (Gen X and Y) follow recurring themes of pre-menopause and child care.

As a response to this, Mofoluwaso Ilevbare, life coach and writer, coined the term: “Flourishing Forties”, inviting women across the globe to reclaim their journey through adulthood. She does so by hosting a community of like-minded women, coaching them through new ways to find purpose and continue to add value to their lives. She speaks to those who seek direction and wish to establish themselves in their forties, without neglecting their everchanging needs. Her work encourages women to reflect inwardly on what legacy they wish to leave in the world as they enter the second half of their lives, reminding them that: “It’s not midlife but the perfect time to set yourself up to become empowered and unstoppable.”

“You have the power to reshape your life, starting right now,” Mofoluwaso says. “There is a popular belief that you’ve got to have life all figured out by forty. If you don’t feel like that right now, here’s the good news: reinventing your life is within your reach, regardless of your age or circumstances. Your past does not have to define you forever - it is merely a chapter in your journey. You can rewrite your story and create the life you desire.”

Among her work, Mofoluwaso has released a downloadable ‘purpose planner’ and is set to launch her podcast and wellness business centered around productivity, energy, and confidence in their forties. Statistics show that after the age of forty, 56% of women sleep less than seven hours a night, on average; in turn, harming metabolic health and weight management. Her book, titled - Flourishing Forties, will be released by the end of 2024, where she will continue to guide women through their inevitable period of transition, navigating them with grace and purpose.

Mofoluwaso has garnered international recognition for her work as one of the Top Global 100 HR leaders, Top 100 Leading Ladies Africa, Top 100 Career Women Nigeria, Pride of Africa Women, Global Icons 2022, NBC Rising Africa, and was a finalist in the Australia Leadership Awards. She has received a commendation from the State of Georgia for her gender empowerment initiatives over the years.

After the pandemic, the entrepreneur hosted networking events in Europe and West Africa, attracting a new community of speakers and business owners. During this time, many were left feeling isolated as their working lives suffered unprecedented consequences. At her event in London, England, the turnout exceeded expectations and Mofoluwaso expanded her venue size as a result. Today, she continues hosting events and plans to increase her reach and inclusivity, by releasing her content to a global audience.

On behalf of this underrepresented demographic, voices like Mofoluwaso’s, bring attention to a reality that all women are to face in their lives. She calls for women in their forties to find a community and remain optimistic in their future endeavors; through her motivational speeches and an array of promising ventures in the health and wellness space. Rather than feeling as if life must come to a standstill upon reaching a certain age, she uplifts women to “fall in love” with who they are growing to become, day by day. The overarching message of her work is “Forty is the new bold.”
