The Practicalities of Travel to Greenland—How to Reach the Arctic Circle

Travelling to exotic, far-flung, and less conventional destinations has become hugely popular with adventurous travellers and those tired of repeating the same holidays in locations known for overcrowding, sweltering summers, and packed beaches.

For many, the barrier holding them back is often knowing how to organise a memorable, exciting holiday or concerns about accessibility and language barriers.

As an expert travel provider and a company specialising in incredible and unforgettable holiday packages, with every detail taken care of, the Baltic Travel Company has put this guide together to clarify how to get to Greenland and what to expect from the moment you arrive.

Visiting Greenland: Travelling to the Far North in the Arctic Circle

The first point is that, although heading towards the Arctic seems challenging, several reliable airlines and services make it far easier to travel than you might anticipate. While there is little in the way of trains and roads between villages to the very far north, you'll find ample opportunities to experience alternatives, including:

  • Snowmobiles

  • Ferries and boat transfers

  • Small domestic flights

  • Dog sledding

  • Rental bicycles in the summer

Public transport is available within the cities and larger towns, but many opt to try something new as part of the full experience of travelling to Greenland. You can journey around the coastline via boat, yacht, or cruise ship, with stop-offs along the way at tiny, uninhabited islands and rugged shorelines that would be all but impossible to reach via road.

To travel to Greenland from the UK, we offer comprehensive packages that include return flights to Copenhagen or Reykjavik, where you’ll connect to Air Greenland or Icelandair flights bound for Greenland.

Examples of Holiday Package Itineraries in Greenland

The easiest way to illustrate what to expect from your first journey through Greenland is by showcasing some of our most popular tour packages and clarifying the travel arrangements we’ll make on your behalf, included in the price as standard, along with ATOL protection and taxes.

Visiting Greenland’s Arctic Waters and Travelling to Disko Bay

Our first featured package is the ever-popular Greenland Disko Bay Adventure, a luxurious and immersive 13-day trip that really is the holiday of a lifetime. You begin by flying to Reykjavik, where we’ll provide a shuttle to your hotel to ensure you can relax and enjoy your first day.

Day two includes breakfast at the hotel before heading to the airport. There, you'll travel onward to Nuuk, the capital city of Greenland. This remarkable place has a historic waterfront, numerous statues and iconic landmarks, and, of course, the harbour, where your ship awaits.

After boarding, settling in, and being shown around this fantastic cruise ship, you'll begin the journey into the Arctic Circle, travelling to Disko Bay, an area famous for its icebergs and rare wildlife. Many of the floating icebergs originate from the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Ilulissat Icefjord.

The coming days are packed with excitement, including:

  • Visiting communities and archaeological sites and heading into the smaller fjords on expedition boats.

  • Whale watching from the top deck and looking for reindeer and Arctic foxes, with nature landings to get a closer look.

  • Exquisite onboard dining, with excursions into modern and ancient towns near the Arctic Circle, where you can purchase unique mementoes and see some of the world's most isolated and remote landscapes.

On day 12, you’ll travel back to Nuuk and wave a warm goodbye to the wonderful crew and expedition team. You'll have time to wind down and reminisce before returning to Reykjavik for a final overnight stay and breakfast before your return flight.

Booking a Greenland Holiday to See the Midnight Sun and Summer Icebergs

Our second option is the 10-day Summer, Sun, and Icebergs package. Guests fly to Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital, and spend the night at a comfortable airport hotel after a day exploring the modern, thriving city. On day two, you'll catch an Air Greenland flight to Nuuk, with onboard catering and movies alongside astonishing views over the ice sheets.

On arrival in Nuuk, our guide will meet you and help with the check-in. Then, you'll be able to unpack and see Nuuk firsthand, with museums, exhibitions, theatres, gyms, hiking routes, and even skiing or swimming for active travellers.

This relaxed Greenland holiday ensures you’ll see all of the best Nuuk and Ilulissat have to offer. A fjord adventure via boat takes you through the Nuuk Fjord to see the stunning mountain ranges, heading past the city and into the waters to see the floating icebergs.

Other excursions and optional activities include a fishing expedition to Qooqqut to catch your own fresh fish for lunch, hiking in the snowy forests while the chef prepares lunch, guided tours of Ilulissat with a short connecting flight, helicopter tours, and whale safaris, where you'll be able to spot some of the humpback, minke, and fin whales that frequent the waters during the warmer weather.

At the end of your holiday, you'll head back to Copenhagen and catch a flight back to London. Checked luggage, cabin baggage, hotels, and breakfasts are included as standard.

We hope we've inspired you to experience Greenland for yourself and shown how having all of the travel arrangements, connections, transfers, and hotels pre-organised ensures that all you need to do is sit back and enjoy the adventure.
