Skylands, Tasmania's most ambitious sustainable community development, has been unveiled on the historic Droughty Point Peninsula. Approved by Clarence City Council, this project signifies a groundbreaking approach to creating sustainable neighborhoods that prioritize community connection and environmental stewardship.
Set against stunning waterfront views, Skylands aims to counter urban sprawl while offering an exceptional living experience combining the best of Tasmanian lifestyle with modern sustainability practices. Thirty-eight percent, 108 hectares, is dedicated to public open space, conserving natural habitats and creating recreational spaces.
"Skylands Hobart represents a vision for Tasmania's residential development," said Greg Carr. "We're creating more than homes; we're building a community that prioritizes sustainability, walkability, connectivity, and quality of life for residents."
Key features of Skylands:
• Diverse range of housing options, including single-family homes, apartments, and social housing, ensuring access for all demographics,
• Walkable neighborhoods and essential services within a 10-minute walk
• Extensive network of bushwalking and cycling trails
• Preservation of Aboriginal and European heritage
• Direct ferry access to Hobart
• Safe, family-friendly streets with traffic-calming measures
• Homes designed specifically to complement Tasmanian architectural and lifestyle preferences
The historic Droughty Point Peninsula, once used by Aboriginals to harvest seafood, later became home to Tasmania's first whaling station and was eventually transformed into farmland. Albert Carr acquired the property in 1981, and his family has worked diligently to ensure the development honours its’ heritage while creating a sustainable future for generations to come.
Sustainability features prominently in every aspect of Skylands’ design, from its compact and efficient layout to its emphasis on reducing vehicle dependency through walkable neighbourhoods and public transport options. Its generous public open space not only offers recreational opportunities but also preserves the natural environment that makes Tasmania unique.
“By prioritizing sustainable development practices and creating real opportunities for community connection, Skylands sets a new standard for residential development in Tasmania. Our family is proud to be creating a place where residents can truly belong, regardless of their stage in life,” added Greg Carr.
The development is expected to become a model for future sustainable communities, demonstrating how thoughtful urban planning can create vibrant, healthy, and livable neighborhoods while preserving natural environments and promoting sustainable living practices.
