Psychophysiologist, researcher, and CMO of Stella Mental Health, Dr. Eugene Lipov, announces the forthcoming release of his new book, The God Shot, co-authored with writer Lauren Ungeldi. Scheduled for release on February 17, 2026, and also translated to Spanish since trauma is universal, the book offers readers a deeply personal and scientifically grounded exploration of trauma, its biological roots, generational impact, and the growing movement to redefine how it is understood and treated.
At its heart, The God Shot is a message of hope. Drawing from decades of clinical work and personal experience, Dr. Lipov presents an alternative perspective on post-traumatic stress, reframing it not as a fixed disorder but as a potentially reversible injury, which he instead refers to as post-traumatic stress injury (PTSI). “When people lose faith and hope, that’s when suffering becomes unbearable,” says Dr. Lipov. “If trauma is seen as an injury rather than a life sentence, it opens the door to healing.”
Blending memoir, neuroscience, and patient narratives, The God Shot delves into the complexities of trauma and its lasting effects across generations. The book traces Dr. Lipov’s journey from anesthesiologist to what he now calls a psychophysiologist, a physician studying the body’s fight-or-flight system and its role in emotional and psychological distress. His medical background and personal history form the very foundation of his practice. As the son of a World War II veteran, Dr. Lipov grew up in what he describes as a “generational PTSD household.” Losing his mother to depression in his medical career shaped his life’s mission to help others find the hope his family lost.
“This book is my way of saying there is something we can do,” Dr. Lipov shares. “You don’t have to be at war to carry trauma. It can happen in families, in relationships, in childhood. But it’s not permanent, there are ways forward.” The God Shot presents a comprehensive view of trauma through the lens of neuroscience, patient narratives, and evolving therapeutic approaches. While avoiding prescriptive solutions, the book looks at emerging interventions that may help “reset” the body’s stress response and restore the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for the symptoms of post-traumatic stress, back to a pre-trauma state. Beyond medicine, The God Shot challenges social stigma. Dr. Lipov underscores that trauma is not weakness but a biological reaction to overwhelming stress, something that can be measured, understood, and, in many cases, eased. “Words matter,” he notes. “When we call it a ‘disorder,’ it can make people feel broken beyond repair. Calling it an injury suggests it can heal. And that’s the truth I want people to hold onto.”
Through compelling storytelling and accessible science, the book invites readers to reconsider how trauma is diagnosed and treated. Encompassing a range of emerging therapeutic approaches, including nerve-based interventions, psychedelic research, and pharmacological treatments, Dr. Lipov emphasizes that The God Shot is a roadmap for understanding the science of trauma through the lens of compassion, evidence, and possibility.
From soldiers and first responders to survivors of harm and loss, and even dogs, the book features stories of individuals reclaiming their lives through understanding, connection, and compassion. Ultimately, Dr. Lipov’s perspective bridges the divide between psychiatry and physiology. It is an appeal for empathy and a call to reimagine trauma care, and a testament to resilience. “I wrote this book so others might not have to experience the same despair my mother did,” Dr. Lipov says. “If people know there’s hope, that alone could help save lives.”
