Swordfish Energy Inc., a Canadian clean-tech company headquartered in British Columbia, announces the opening of a $3 million seed round aimed at impact-driven investors, family offices, and high-net individuals committed to advancing clean, reliable, community-centric energy solutions.

Launched in 2018 by entrepreneur Dorn Beattie, Swordfish is developing a new class of hydrokinetic turbines, known as Compeller, a spiral-shaped turbine engineered to harness consistent baseload power from natural water currents in rivers and oceans. The company’s proprietary laminar flow turbine is designed to convert kinetic energy with high efficiency and is built for safe interaction with marine environments.

The horizontal-axis architecture, reverse-geometry engineering, direct-drive configuration without mechanical gearing, and hydrophobic self-cleaning blades form the basis of a system intended to deliver consistent renewable energy while minimizing operational impact in remote settings and preserving marine environments.

Swordfish’s commercialization strategy is focused on replacing diesel generators in remote and off-grid communities, particularly in indigenous regions across Western Canada. According to Beattie, many of these communities rely on diesel fuel for essential needs, such as heat and electricity, yet he recognizes that they may face issues related to cost, supply risk, and air quality.

“Our goal is to provide low-cost, clean energy to indigenous communities that are off-grid and underserved, and that have had no alternative but to keep their lights on with diesel power,” Beattie explains. “When I think about the long-term benefits of transitioning these communities to clean baseload energy, it becomes emotional for me. I believe this work has life-changing potential.”

Swordfish’s hydrokinetic units are engineered to operate in both river and ocean environments, with capacity ranges that could support community-scale energy needs. According to Beattie, a major driver of adoption is the projected long-term reduction in the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE)  over 20-year renewable contracts. “We operate as the junior partner in community-led projects,” he explains. “Our model allows local leadership to retain ownership while we support and manage the technical operations. It is designed for economic development and local empowerment as much as it is for clean power.”

The company has been preparing for expansion through a transnational model that begins with manufacturing and distribution in British Columbia, followed by planned facilities in additional regions and partnerships as market demand grows. “Bringing in a financial partner is like getting married; you need the right person,” he says. “This seed round is about finding aligned partners who understand the mission and the scale of opportunity in front of us.”

Beattie highlights that the $3 million seed round will fund full commercialization of the Compeller technology, allowing Swordfish to initiate production through its established supply chain.

Dorn Beattie’s career spans successful ventures across music and marine efficiency industries, ultimately leading to the development of SwordFish’s turbine technology. “I put everything I had into this company because I believe in its purpose,” he says. “We’re inviting investors to join as financial partners who want to accelerate a solution that can meaningfully support communities for generations.”

SwordFish Energy is currently preparing for upcoming engagements with Indigenous leaders, including participation at the First Nations Energy Summit in early December.

As SwordFish moves into its next phase, the company aims to deepen its relationships with Indigenous communities, strengthen its manufacturing foundation, and prepare for broader global expansion. The seed round marks a key milestone in this trajectory, offering investors the opportunity to participate in a mission-driven clean energy initiative with long-term community and economic impact.
