As emotional disconnection grows on college campuses, relationship education is emerging as a missing piece of student wellbeing.

Across colleges and universities today, many students are navigating dating and relationships during a time of rapid identity development, academic pressure, and constant digital noise. While the desire for connection is strong, many young adults lack a shared framework for understanding emotional responses, leaving relationships marked by confusion, distance, and uncertainty.

This growing gap between the desire for connection and the ability to sustain it is what led CT Kaupp to create The Mindful Soulpreneur. His work centers on relationship education that helps young adults understand the emotional patterns shaping dating today. Instead of assuming something is “wrong” when things feel difficult, his approach emphasizes clarity, self awareness, and emotional understanding during a formative stage of life.

Recent research underscores the importance of this approach. A 2024 peer-reviewed study, Anxiety and Avoidance in Attachment as Predictors of Emotional Regulation Difficulties in University Students, found high levels of insecure attachment among university students, closely linked to challenges with emotional regulation. The findings suggest that many students enter relationships without the tools needed to navigate closeness, conflict, or vulnerability.

“College students are trying to figure out relationships while juggling constant pressure, transition, and the pull of digital life,” Kaupp says. “No one is teaching them how emotional patterns and learned behaviors affect their ability to connect. So when things feel hard, or the same patterns keep repeating, they assume something is wrong with them instead of understanding what’s actually happening beneath the surface.”

Attachment styles offer a useful framework for making sense of these experiences. Without language for how anxiety or avoidance shapes reactions, behaviors like withdrawal, overthinking, or difficulty expressing needs are often misread as incompatibility. Naming these patterns shifts the experience from self blame to self understanding, opening the door to more intentional and grounded connection.

CT engages students across campuses through in-person workshops and events, and continues the conversation through social media and his podcast, Securely You. The goal is simple: to help students make sense of how they communicate, navigate boundaries, and respond emotionally within connection.

As colleges and universities continue expanding conversations around student wellbeing, relationship education remains an often overlooked part of student development. This work highlights the value of addressing how students relate to themselves and others during early adulthood, when emotional habits and expectations are actively forming.
