Snohomish County maintains records for more than 84,000 private septic systems through the OnlineRME database managed by the Snohomish County Health Department.
“Snohomish County has one of the better-organized septic databases in Washington State,” Art explained. “OnlineRME holds as-built drawings, service history, and permit records for most properties. But reading the documents and understanding what they mean for a specific property takes experience we’ve built from years of field work out here.”
King County, with over 85,000 private septic systems, requires searching two official databases: OnlineRME and the ArcGIS Septic Records app launched in 2023.
“King County is one of the more complicated places to search on your own,” Art said. “Updated drawings sometimes appear in Time of Sale Inspection Reports under Application History, not in the main records view. Most people don’t know to look there. We check both systems to make sure nothing is missed.”
Skagit County operates through its own portal at skagitcounty.net, organizing as-built drawings, permits, inspection history, and pump records in separate sections. Island County splits records between the SmartGov Community Portal and OnlineRME, requiring cross-referencing to obtain a complete picture.
“Island County is unique because the records are divided between two completely different systems,” Art added. “If you don’t know that, you could miss half the documentation.”
