PS Fertility is breaking the silence around unexplained infertility with PS Detect. This diagnostic test measures phosphatidylserine (PS) on the surface of sperm to provide new insight into their ability to fertilize an egg. The test generates a metric called the PS Score, which measures the percentage of sperm expressing PS and provides an indication of sperm fertilization competence—information that may not be apparent through standard sperm count testing.
A Missing Piece in Male Fertility Testing
Research from PS Fertility and its collaborators identified PS on the surface of live sperm as an important biomarker involved in sperm-egg fusion. PS Detect measures PS expression to generate the PS Score, providing a new measure of sperm fertilization competence alongside conventional semen analysis.

How PS Detect May Help Couples With Unexplained Infertility
Male factors contribute to approximately half of all infertility cases. Research published in PLOS One indicates that 20-30% of men with normal semen analysis results may still experience infertility. For couples who have received normal or inconclusive male fertility testing but are still struggling to conceive, PS Detect provides an additional data point for discussion with their doctor.
A low PS Score can indicate reduced sperm fertilization competence even when a conventional semen analysis result appears normal. PS Fertility currently considers a PS Score of 78% or higher to be within the normal range. This means 78 out of every 100 sperm possess the essential PS biomarker required to successfully fuse with and fertilize an egg. This additional information may help physicians better understand fertility challenges and guide treatment decisions.
PS Detect May Help Guide IUI and IVF Decisions
PS Detect may also provide useful information for couples considering intrauterine insemination (IUI) or conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF). A low PS Score could indicate that these treatments may not be the most appropriate option, potentially helping couples avoid treatments that are unlikely to result in pregnancy.
From Diagnosis to Treatment: Insights Into Varicocele Repair
Research also suggests that PS Detect may help identify men who could benefit from treatment for varicocele, a condition involving enlarged veins in the scrotum that is associated with male infertility.
Studies have found that PS Scores improved following varicocele repair, reaching levels comparable to those observed in pregnancy-proven fertile donors. Research has also examined the relationship between PS Score and pregnancy outcomes.
These findings suggest that PS Score may provide clinicians with additional information when evaluating men with infertility and determining appropriate treatment options.
