Now, recently released the Wildlife Series a 6 coin collection by the Royal Canadian Mint has already been a hot item for silver coin collectors and investors. The 2011 Canadian Timber Wolves silver coin was the first to be released followed by the 2011 Canadian Silver Grizzly, and the recent 2012 Canadian Silver Cougar. Each one of the Wildlife Collection is 1 oz. of .9999 pure silver.

The Canadian Cougar silver coin is one of two coins to be released for 2012 with a limited minting quantity of 1,000,000. For a pure silver coin collection a quantity of one million is relatively small and does sell out rather fast as it relates to collector coins. For comparison the American Silver Eagle had a quantity mintage of 29 million through just the first 8 months of 2011.

The Cougar silver coin was designed by William Woodruff, a senior Royal Canadian mint engraver, showing the cougar with his mouth open while standing on a branch. The reverse shows the same image of Queen Elizabeth II that you find on the Canadian Maple Leaf.

The first to get a viewing of these amazing coins were numismatic enthusiasts at the American Numismatic Association’s 2011 World’s Fair of Money. The fair was located in Chicago, Illinois.

Each one of the Wildlife Series has a face value minted on the coin of $5, though the true value is greater and is affected by the silver spot market price.

If you are looking to purchase the new Cougar silver coins you have to find an authorized dealer as they are not available directly from the Canadian Mint. Dealers purchase the coins based on the spot price of silver at the time of purchase and then they are sold to the consumer with a dealer markup.

At present the Cougar would be selling for around $42 a coin while the Timberwolves silver coin sells for a premium of $57 (first in the series). The Grizzly silver coin sells close to the Cougar at $45.

The remaining two silver coins for the series are set to be released in 2013 with no current information on the exact date or designs of the silver coins.

The Canadian Cougar coin will be available for purchase at ITM Trading on October 1, 2011.
