2013 Honda Civic Is Only Small Car to Ace Every IIHS Crash Test

Automakers will often tailor the designs of their vehicles to meet demanding crash-test criteria, but a recently introduced small-overlap front crash evaluation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has many of them scrambling to fortify their models. In the small-car segment, only the 2013 Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe have received the highest rating of "good" in the small-overlap front test, helping the models each earn an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation.

To earn the Top Safety Pick+ status, a vehicle must achieve "good" ratings in four out of the five IIHS crash tests, which also include the moderate-overlap front, side, rollover and rear evaluations. In addition, the model must rate no lower than "acceptable" in the fifth test. Both the 2013 Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe earned "good" ratings in all five tests, standing alone among the small cars tested thus far.

"If you want to make sure you have all the angles covered for crash protection, the Honda Civic is the only compact car that has proven it can provide that peace of mind," said Tony Pescatore, general sales manager of Chicagoland Honda dealer Rosen Honda. "Even though the Civic received a complete redesign for the 2012 model year, Honda continued to make significant improvements to the car for 2013, and one of the fruits of that labor is that it's the safest option in its class."

As part of its reengineering for the 2013 model year, the Civic Sedan was outfitted with the next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE II) body structure, which better absorbs the energy created during a broader range of frontal impacts. In addition, all 2013 Honda Civic models come standard with a rearview camera, which can help prevent fender-benders in parking lots, and Bluetooth connectivity, which allows drivers to make calls and stream music without the distraction of fumbling for their phones.

Despite its added safety, the Honda Civic also became more stylish, refined and responsive for the 2013 model year. The 2013 Civic Sedan features a new chrome-trimmed grille and front bumper, and its rear bumper and taillights have been redesigned. Inside, both the Civic Sedan and Coupe offer higher-quality soft-touch materials on the dashboard and door panels. Meanwhile, the suspension and steering in each model have been retuned for improved handling.

"The 2013 Civic may be safe, but its upgrades in style, technology and ride ensure that it is by no means boring," added Pescatore. "While the Civic was the best-selling compact on the market last year, Honda refused to rest on its laurels, making sure the car is still well ahead of the curve in its segment."
