Automaker Helps Customers Stay in Motion amid US Government Shutdown

As U.S. Congress continues its internal bickering over the shutdown of the federal government, it is estimated that more than 800,000 workers are currently going without pay. To help its customers in that furloughed group of government employees, Hyundai recently announced that it has augmented its Assurance program, ensuring they do not have to make an auto loan or lease payment on their Hyundai vehicle for as long as they are out of work.

The updated Hyundai Assurance program also allows furloughed government workers to purchase a Hyundai model in October with a 90-day deferment on their first payment. Eligibility for the program requires that the worker's payment plan be made through Hyundai Finance America. Introduced nearly four years ago, the original Hyundai Assurance job-loss protection program was designed to assist Hyundai customers who were laid off during the Great Recession, providing them with the ability to return a purchased Hyundai if they lost their job within the first year of owning it.

"Hyundai continues to show its customers that while there is so much that we can't control in these turbulent times, they can count on the automaker and its vehicles to keep working for them," said Scott Levy, general manager of Rosen Hyundai, a Hyundai dealership near Chicago. "There are many furloughed government workers in the Chicago area who do us all a service by monitoring public health and the environment, and we're glad to have the opportunity to help some of them during the shutdown."

For government employees considering a new Hyundai, the updated 2014 Hyundai Sonata is rolling out to dealerships this month with a refreshed exterior and new safety technology. Outside, the 2014 Sonata midsize sedan receives a bolder grille, new 17-inch or 18-inch multispoke wheels and optional HID Xenon headlamps and LED taillights.

Inside the cabin, the latest Sonata offers a newly available Blind Spot Detection system that uses sonar sensors to give drivers audio and visual alerts of surrounding vehicles, while an optional blind-spot mirror can provide them with additional awareness on the road. Further bolstering safety is the now-standard Vehicle Stability Management system, which prevents slippage in variable conditions and during abrupt lane changes or cornering.

"The Sonata is already very popular because of everything it provides for its affordable price tag, but buyers of the 2014 model will get even more style and safety for their money," added Levy. "Even as driving gets trickier with winter weather on the way, the Sonata's advanced technology will help owners stay in control when the roads get icy or snowy."
