As the flagship luxury sedan for Mercedes-Benz, the S-Class receives all the latest and greatest amenities from the automaker each time it is redesigned. That is particularly true of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which boasts new options like a hot-stone massage seat function and a cabin-fragrance system to coddle its passengers. The first new S-Class model to hit the market, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550, is currently rolling out to dealerships.

Placing comfort front and center, the 2014 S550 not only comes with standard 16-way heated front seats, but it is now available with heated armrests and door panels. For those who prefer to have a driver, an optional executive right rear seat reclines up to 43 degrees and is complemented by a power calf rest and power footrest. The serene cabin is illuminated purely by LED lights, including multicolor ambient lighting, while all passengers can enjoy a smoother ride thanks to the newly available Magic Body Control technology, which analyzes upcoming road surfaces with a stereo camera and adjusts the suspension accordingly.

"The S-Class doesn't just feature the best that Mercedes-Benz has to offer; it sets the bar for the entire industry when it comes to comfort and convenience," said James Buckley, general manager of Smith Motor Sales, a Massachusetts Mercedes-Benz dealership. "That has never been more true than with the 2014 S-Class, which makes every passenger feel like they are in a mobile luxury lounge with its spacious cabin and new technologies and amenities."

While the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 is ideal for cruising the city between business meetings and dinners, it can also let loose on the open road. The luxury sedan's 4.6-liter biturbo V8 engine has been tweaked to produce 449 horsepower, an increase of 20 horsepower compared to the outgoing model. When that impressive output combines with a weight loss of about 200 pounds from the increased use of aluminum in the body and suspension, the 2014 S550 can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds, making it more than a half-second faster than its predecessor.

The most impactful technological advancements on the updated S-Class come in the area of safety, where a new Driver Assistance Package joins a list of more than 30 standard and optional safety features. Distronic Plus with Steering Assist offers radar-based cruise control with semi-autonomous steering, while Pre-Safe Brake, Pre-Safe Plus and BAS Plus with Cross Traffic Assist combine to either automatically apply the brakes or take other precautionary measures if a potential collision is sensed from the front, rear or side of the vehicle. In addition, Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Protection incorporate one-sided braking to prevent drivers from unintentionally leaving their lane.

"The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class protects its occupants just as well as it pampers them, so occupants can feel completely relaxed inside the cabin, even when it gets hectic out on the road," noted Buckley. "That's a good thing for the entire auto industry, because similar safety technologies will inevitably be mimicked by mainstream brands in the coming years."
