Affordable Sports Car Excels in Stringent Crash Tests

Priced starting at less than $26,000 and weighing less than 3,000 pounds, the Scion FR-S is designed to provide a lot of driving fun for less money, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently found that the affordable sports car doesn't cut corners when it comes to crash protection. The 2014 Scion FR-S received a 5-Star Safety Rating in the latest round of testing from the NHTSA in its New Car Assessment Program.

To earn its overall 5-Star Safety Rating, the 2014 FR-S achieved individual five-star scores in side-crash and rollover tests, as well as a four-star score in frontal-crash testing. While the FR-S secured its latest accolade with help from the extensive use of high-strength steel in its body structure, the sports car offers Scion's Star Safety System to prevent accidents from happening in the first place. Standard features in the Star Safety System include vehicle stability control, traction control, an anti-lock brake system, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist and Smart Stop Technology, which can automatically cut engine power if both the gas and brake pedals are pressed at the same time unintentionally.

"The Scion FR-S has already been impressing the auto industry with its lightweight and nimble body, but now we're seeing that same body can also provide big-time crash protection should the worst ever happen out on the road," said Wade Sterry, general manager of Russel Scion, a Baltimore Scion dealership. "That means that FR-S owners aren't just getting a thrilling ride at an incredible price; they're getting complete peace of mind as well."

While the Scion FR-S is geared toward value, buyers can still opt for a luxurious look and feel in the sports car. Arriving at dealerships this month, the limited-edition 2014 Scion FR-S Monogram Series comes with heated leather-trimmed front seats with Alcantara inserts, dual-zone automatic climate control, a smart key with push-button start, and a BeSpoke premium audio system with navigation and Aha integration. The upscale theme carries over to the exterior, with heated outside mirrors, HID headlamps with LED daytime running lights and a color-keyed rear spoiler. Just 2,000 units of the 2014 FR-S Monogram Series will be produced.
