Eating Disorders, Addictions and Substance Use Disorders, a recently released book featuring renowned experts in the eating disorder field, explores research, clinical understanding and treatment of eating disorders, as well as integrative assessment strategies and treatment approaches.

Eating Disorder Center of Denver’s Dr. Tamara Pryor authored three chapters of the book (published at the beginning of April 2014) which focus on what is currently happening in the field of eating disorders, as well as the historical perspectives. She questions the reasons behind the constant relapsing of certain patients and proposes that individuals in need are not receiving the full treatment they deserve. Discussing the relationship between eating disorders and substance use disorders, she emphasizes the importance of teaching eating disorder specialists about substance use also. Since 50% of those with an eating disorder have a substance disorder, she advocates for an integrated approach such as the one used at Eating Disorder Center of Denver (EDCD). The special track (for those with both disorders) implemented at EDCD serves as a model for others interested in developing integrated treatment programs.

Dr. Pryor has worked in the field of eating disorders for more than 30 years, conducting research and publishing articles that examine topics including personality disorders, substance abuse, multi-impulse behavior, sexual functioning, and cognitive rigidity in the eating disordered individual. A founding member of the Eating Disorder Research Society and serving on the Board of Directors of the National Eating Disorders Association, she has presented both nationally and internationally, and co-authored a prevention curriculum and textbook.

Dr. Pryor’s contributions were driven by a necessity to share with others the importance of treating individuals with co-occurring disorders. Dr. Pryor said of the book, “It’s academically dense and very valuable. I love the book in that it provides clarity in the eating disorder field regarding new models of treatment and a better understanding of genetics and neurobiology. Even after being in the industry for over 30 years, I still learned so much. I am confident the book will be well-received.”
