Raising Awareness, Surpassing Goals, and Saving Lives: One Week that Highlights an Ongoing Mission

Denver, Colorado, Feb. 24, 2014 – As proud supporters of the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA), Eating Disorder Center of Denver (EDCD) is thrilled to partner with NEDA in promotion of the 27th annual NEDAwareness Week (February 24 – March 1). This year’s theme: “I had no idea.”

The theme raises awareness of the significant impact eating disorders have on individuals, families, and communities across the nation. The more people who learn, and spread awareness, about these life-threatening illnesses, the more lives can be saved.

[Eating disorder centers are] a gift to give to yourself; [they offer] a safe, nurturing environment that focuses only on your well-being," says a former patient of Eating Disorder Center of Denver’s Binge Eating Disorder program.

Last year, 100% of U.S. states hosted NEDAwareness Week events and activities. Additionally, 51 international countries participated in raising awareness. This year, event coordinators want everyone to get in-the-know and do “just one thing” that raises awareness.

Dr. Tamara Pryor, Clinical Director at EDCD says, “[High School and college] students can seek help from our trained clinical staff and from their on-campus health support systems if they feel like they're falling victim to an eating disorder. Eating disorders can affect…their overall health and well-being.”

Eating Disorder Center of Denver’s outreach efforts during the week include: a canvas and chocolates art therapy event hosted at University of Northern Colorado, informational booths offering henna tattoos at various student union locations, conferences, and numerous other events. Lectures will bolster community education, highlighted by Friday’s breakfast lecture at Denver’s Hilton Garden Inn: “My Ego Made Me Do It: Understanding the Roots of Resistance and Shame” – speaker: Stephanie Schoville, MA, EIOP Coordinator at EDCD.
