In their hearts, drivers want instant gratification when they take home a new car, but in their minds, they need a vehicle that can withstand the test of time and provide long-term value. The Dodge Challenger appears to be satisfying both desires for its owners, as the muscle car not only topped its segment in the recently released J.D. Power 2014 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), but it also received an Edmunds.com 2014 Best Retained Value Award in June.

Surveying more than 86,000 owners and lessees of 2014-model-year vehicles after they had spent 90 days with their rides, J.D. Power asked 233 questions related to potential vehicle problem areas. The 2014 Dodge Challenger produced the least problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) in the Midsize Sporty Car segment, besting its rival, the 2014 Chevy Camaro. Meanwhile, the 2014 Challenger also led the Midsize/Large Coupe category of the Edmunds.com Best Retained Value Awards, which were determined by estimated five-year residual values based on the auto-research site's average "cash" True Market Value price.

"Sportier cars can often result in more trips to the repair shop because of their more complex engineering, but that's not the case with the Dodge Challenger," said Richard Gill, owner of Brigham-Gill Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, a Natick, Massachusetts Dodge dealership. "Challenger buyers can rest assured that they'll spend more time blasting around back roads on weekends instead of fixing the latest issue with their ride, and that reliability bodes well for the car's long-term value."

Whether they are following their heads or their hearts, car buyers continue to turn to the Challenger, as the vehicle set a May sales record last month by moving 5,748 units in the United States. With a track-tuned suspension and 305 horsepower coming from its 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, the standard 2014 Dodge Challenger caters to performance junkies while returning up to 25 mpg on the highway to appeal to frugal commuters. Despite its sporty trim inside the cabin, the Challenger offers plenty of practicality for up to five passengers, boasting best-in-class interior volume and cargo capacity.
