Dallas auto collision attorney Amy Witherite represents injured victims of car crashes. While many car accidents are caused by driver error, sometimes a crash is caused by a defective vehicle or vehicle part. Unsafe and defective car parts could, for example, cause brakes to fail, increase the risk that a car would catch on fire after a crash, or prevent an airbag from functioning as designed.

In the past year, multiple car companies have recalled cars because of defective or unsafe products. In fact, last year, the nation experienced the highest number of vehicle recalls in more than thirty years. In response to these recalls, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a new website. This website, titled Recalls Spotlight and available at http://www.safercar.gov/rs/index.html, puts a “spotlight” on recalled vehicles and vehicle parts. With this website, the agency alerts Americans to ongoing recalls and posts press releases regarding those recalls. NHTSA answers commonly asked questions in an “FAQ” section and posts reports and newsletters. Consumers may sign up for recall alerts by using a NHTSA tool and may check to see if a car is under recall by using the vehicle identification number lookup tool. Finally, if a consumer has a problem with his car and believes it to be related to a mechanical defect, the consumer may file a complaint by using the tools provided.
