Dallas, TX / February 13, 2019 / -- R2 Roof Guys see a lot of cases where a home needs a premature roof replacement due to moisture damage. Water that isn’t dried or removed quickly can cause metal corrosion and wood rot. While it doesn’t happen instantaneously, moisture that is left alone can result in the structural elements of the roofing system that are not water-resistant becoming damaged – and that can put your roof and home at risk.

You can’t completely stop moisture from occurring and collecting, but you can help minimize it with some simple preventive maintenance. The following are some tips that will help you keep your roof and home from suffering damage due to moisture.

Make sure that your drainage system or gutter system isn’t clogged. When there is water or moisture damage, most often it’s because of clogged gutters and downspouts. When there is a clog, leaves and debris can get stuck behind it. That dead vegetation will retain moisture as it decomposes. That means that you should check your gutters and downspouts at regular intervals based on the height of the trees that are around your home. You may also want to consider that your gutters were not installed properly, or think about installing gutter guards to keep debris out of your drainage system.

Make sure your attic is properly ventilated. When there isn’t adequate ventilation from your attic, you run the risk of condensation building up inside the area. With nowhere to escape, the moisture contained in warm air will turn to liquid when it comes into contact with colder objects. This situation can quickly result in a damp attic and underside of your roofing system. Additionally, moisture that is trapped in the attic can cause shingles to “blister,” which can cause them to shift or become dislodged. All of this can result in serious damage to your roof and home.

Make sure that you remove any moss. Of all the different types of organic growth you may encounter on your home or roof, moss is the one you should be most concerned with. It collects and retains moisture, which puts your roof materials at risk. Moss is easier to kill when it’s new, and it should be handled by a professional to make sure that it is eliminated completely.

Make sure you inspect your roof regularly. Typically, there are some warning signs before there is serious damage to your roof or home. That’s why it’s important to have your roof inspected regularly. When minor repairs are made promptly, your home and roof will remain structurally sound.
