media update’s Taylor Goodman unpacks it all right here in 200 words or less.

Let’s get into it:

What is keyword stuffing?

If you’ve heard that less is more, you should know that it is particularly true when integrating keywords into your content / website.

Keyword stuffing is “the practice of loading a webpage with keywords or numbers in an attempt to manipulate a site's ranking in Google search results.” This is according to Google Search Central.

Different types of keyword stuffing include:

  • repeating words or phrases unnecessarily
  • adding blocks of text including the same keyword
  • using keywords that are irrelevant to your content, and
  • adding words that don’t fit the context.

If you’re wondering ‘what’s wrong with that?’, this tactic can result in an unpleasant user experience and your site’s ranking taking a hit, as Google’s crawlers pick up your keyword stuffing and rank your site lower.

How to avoid keyword stuffing?

Avoiding keyword stuffing starts with doing extensive keyword research. This will result in high value keywords that you can integrate into your content.

Once you have a list of quality keywords, ensure that you integrate them into content organically. Remember to write content your audience wants to read.
