Registered dietitian nutritionist and PhD scientist David Wiss has spent much of his professional career focused on helping those who struggle with eating learn how to improve their relationship with food. He is releasing a new app called “Wise Mind Nutrition” that brings much of his work and expertise to everyone’s mobile phone at the end of this calendar year, with the hope that he can reach and help even more people.

While many people focus on dieting, Wiss likes to take a different approach, which he describes as “trauma-informed” and “eating disorder friendly” while having the ability to improve mental health through nutrition and lifestyle medicine.

“It is a psychological process where you learn how to think differently about eating,” Wiss said. “As a clinician there are five things I focus on: when to eat, what to eat, how to eat, how much to eat, and how to think about food, body, and health.”

According to Dr. Wiss, a lot of the emphasis of the program is on how to think about food, not just about what to eat. Additionally, he mentioned that his app is not a diet club with him telling you what to eat, but rather an educational journey where someone can learn how to approach eating.

“This program is informed by healing work, recovery work, and treatment as opposed to some crazy diet fix,” Dr. Wiss said.

The app has a comprehensive intake form in order to tailor the experience to the individual, says Dr. Wiss.

“We assess various mental health symptoms in order to give targeted recommendations for how to approach some of the modules, possible supplements to consider, and specific messaging for people who have disordered eating versus people who do not,” Dr. Wiss said. The current plan is to release the free version of the app by the end of 2022, with a pro version set to follow in early 2023 with even more features.
