Bridgeside Lodge, a high-quality nursing care centre in Islington, London, has been awarded Outstanding status by the Care Quality Commission. This marks the third time in a row the centre has achieved the highest possible quality mark awarded by the independent regulator.
Part of the Forest Healthcare care home company, Bridgeside Lodge has sustained its position as a leading London care centre by focusing on personalised, warm and respectful care, making the most of its enviable position next to Regent’s Canal and creating a real sense of community and inclusivity.
Understanding the Relevance of an Outstanding CQC Rating
Roughly 4% of all British care centres achieve the accolade of an Outstanding rating, and to have achieved this stamp of approval three times in a row is a level of recognition of which the Bridgeside Lodge team can be proud.
According to the CQC, the regulatory body which oversees care standards in the English health and social care sector and is responsible for conducting inspections of all regulated care facilities, to achieve Outstanding even once, a residential home must:
- Provide care that achieves good outcomes that are consistently better than comparable services.
- Receive feedback about the effectiveness of the care provided that shows it is distinctive and exceptional.
- Promote good quality of life and work based on the best available evidence.
- Apply these approaches to all avenues of care, treatment and support.
In extracts from the report published by CQC inspectors, the care centre was found to deliver 'exceptionally high-quality care', and to be an 'extremely well-led service'. Inspectors found that the feedback from service users - including residents and their loved ones - was 'consistently and overwhelmingly positive' and that they had seen evidence that the care centre exceeded expectations.
Bridgeside Lodge was first awarded Outstanding status in 2015 and has maintained a continued level of care since, making it one of a very select number of residential care homes that can boast this degree of recognition.
Celebrating Excellence in London Nursing Care
While Bridgeside Lodge's facilities, private accommodation, specialist care support, and location are all undoubtedly of very high quality, many of the team working at the care centre recognise that it is the people, their compassion, and their relationships with residents that make the centre such a unique and welcoming environment.
Fatma Makalo, Registered Manager, says, 'The last few years have been the toughest the care sector has ever faced. The dedication our teams have shown to providing the best care and safest environment for our residents reaches beyond outstanding.
We welcome the CQC’s findings, particularly during an unannounced inspection – which means the regulators found us as we are, every day, and reviewed our processes, interactions and routine working practices. While the outcome is wonderful, there was no doubt that the skills, talent and passion of our care teams would meet anything but the highest quality benchmarks.
It is a testament and tribute to the entire team, without exception, that we have not only been graded as Outstanding but have adhered to the exacting standards we, and all Forest Healthcare centres, set for ourselves over such a long period.
Our residential staff work to protect the dignity and independence of every person, whether helping to furnish living spaces to personal tastes, hosting riverside tea parties and barbecues, or booking pampering sessions in our salon to ensure our residents feel loved, cared for and supported.’
Amanda Scott, Chief Executive of the Forest Healthcare network, incorporating 13 care and nursing homes throughout southeast England, noted, 'We are incredibly proud of everyone at Bridgeside Lodge for maintaining the gold standard of care. Fatma has won awards in her own right for her outstanding contributions to care in the borough and is an inspirational leader for whom values-based care comes naturally.’
