Keith Clouse, a Dallas attorney for physicians, directs readers to a recent news article describing the growth of physician-owned hospitals in North Texas. Many doctor-owned specialty hospitals, surgical centers, and imaging centers currently operate in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. These hospitals are expanding despite being banned from accepting Medicare and Medicaid patients.

Advocates believe physician-owned hospitals can deliver quicker results for patients. The facilities are often smaller, with a more narrow focus. Many offer no or limited emergency services. Doctors can optimize the patient experience while remaining independent and without getting caught up in the bureaucracy found at many nonprofit hospitals.

Several critics oppose physician-owned hospitals. The American Hospital Association, for example, vehemently opposes these hospitals. The association claims that the physician-owned hospitals focus on profit over patient care; the association notes that physicians have competing interests when they own the facilities to which they refer patients. Other critics claim that physician-owned facilities burden nonprofit hospitals by rejecting patients with ongoing health issues and directing those patients to nonprofit hospitals.
