King Mohammed VI launches a new rehabilitation project of the old médina of Salé

HM King Mohammed VI chaired, on Wednesday in Salé, the launch ceremony of the city's 2014-2016 integrated urban upgrading program, a structuring project to preserve the historical heritage of this centuries-old city, improve the lifestyle of its citizens and spur its socio-economic basis.

Worth 1.038 billion dirhams, the new program is based on a systematic participatory approach that brings together all city's actors, he added, noting that the three-year program touches on four main broad lines, namely the preservation of the city's culture and heritage, the reinforcement of basic infrastructure, the development of the tourism and handicraft sector and the eradication of shanties.

The program seeks the rehabilitation of the old médina of Salé, inns and run-down houses, the promotion of jobs related to the craft industry, the restoration of the city's historical sites, the redevelopment of the coast road, the upgrading of some streets (Hay Essalam, Abderrahim Bouabid, Atlas Al Kabir, Ibn Al Haitam) and the city's access roads, as well as the promotion of under-equipped neighborhoods.

The program is meant to equitably share community-based equipment between the city's different urban segments, promote employment and create wealth.
