2015 Ram 3500 Pickup Receives Boosts in Torque and Payload

Pickup-truck manufacturers frequently make contradicting claims regarding best-in-class capability, which is why the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) created its J2807 towing standards to place them all on the same playing field. With production underway for its 2015 heavy-duty models, Ram has become the first brand to adopt those SAE practices across its entire pickup-truck lineup, and in doing so, the marque has not only retained its best-in-class achievements, but also built on them.

As with prior models, the 2015 Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 will both offer best-in-class towing capacity when equipped with different versions of the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engine, pulling up to 17,970 pounds and 30,000 pounds, respectively. However, the Cummins diesel has been recalibrated to produce an extra 15 pound-feet of torque in the 2015 Ram 3500, bringing the truck's total to a class-leading 865 pound-feet. Meanwhile, the Ram 3500 equipped with the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine has received a 100-pound boost in its gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), allowing the model to reach a new best-in-class payload of 7,390 pounds.

"Though existing Ram owners already know from experience, buyers can now be fully confident that their heavy-duty truck's capability is truly best-in-class with the brand's new SAE J2807 compliance," said Richard Gill, owner of Brigham-Gill Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, a Ram dealer in Natick, Mass. "At the same time, Ram is continuing to grow its leadership by refining its legendary engines to push the limits of horsepower, torque, towing and payload."

Combined with the class-leading fuel economy of the half-ton Ram 1500, the impressive capability of the Ram lineup has proven popular with buyers so far this year. Through July, the brand has sold 19 percent more pickup trucks than it did within the same period in 2013, moving a total of 239,481 units. Ram was also the only major pickup-truck brand to experience double-digit growth in July, with its sales rising by 14 percent year-over-year.
