New Health Canada Guidelines Prompt Water Quality Advisory for Horse Lake System Users - CFNR Network

New changes to drinking water guidelines in Canada have prompted a water quality advisory for users of the Horse Lake water system.

Health Canada recently established new guidelines setting the maximum accepted level of manganese in drinking water to 0.12 per Litre.

While the levels in the Horse Lake system have not changed, they have historically slotted in between 0.14 and 0.29 per Litre, forcing the advisory.

Small amounts of manganese are fine for consumption in adults, but have been proven to have adverse affects on children’s health.

Boiling the water will not remove manganese, though it is still completely safe to use for bathing and cleaning purposes.

The CRD has begun improving its infrastructure to match the new guidelines, and will be applying for grants to help meet the guidelines in the near future.
