Dr. David Wiss is a registered dietitian nutritionist who has recently launched a new app called Wise Mind Nutrition, designed to help people become wise-minded eaters. This means having a balanced, sustainable approach to food and eating that considers not only what to eat but also when, how, how much, and how to think about food.
The app is based on the five components that Dr. David Wiss has identified through his experience working with people with disordered eating patterns. These five components are:
When to Eat
The first step to becoming a wise-minded eater is to create consistency with sleep, nutrition, and exercise. This means developing a strategy for when to eat that takes into account circadian rhythms and sleep patterns. Eating within an hour of waking up and not going more than five waking hours without eating is often recommended. Integrating movement or exercise at specific times of the day can also be helpful.
What to Eat
After creating consistency with sleep and meal timing, the next step is to consider what to eat. Dr. Wiss recommends a food group system that encourages consumption from all food groups daily and is flexible to meet the needs of vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores. The goal is to aim for three or more food groups at every meal and two or more at snacks. Once this goal has been achieved, the next step is to focus on foods that are enjoyable and have the highest anti-inflammatory potential.
How to Eat
This component explores how someone connects and relates to food. It includes concepts of mindful and soulful eating and helps to develop positive rituals before, during, and after food. This is the chance for someone to do some deep healing around their relationship with food. Grocery shopping, cooking, and cleaning up are also emphasized.
How Much to Eat
This component aims to empower people to make decisions about how much to eat based on internal cues of hunger and fullness rather than being prescribed by an expert. Eating regular meals that are balanced in macronutrients and include at least three food groups with all food groups spread out throughout the day should inform the body how much to eat. Meanwhile, some people need to be more intentional here.
How to Think About Food
This component addresses cognitive processes around food, which can be influenced by one’s sense of self, trauma history, exposure to dieting, and so much more. The app aims to help people develop a healthier relationship with food and body by addressing these issues.
Wise Mind Nutrition is a comprehensive app that addresses all the components of eating food for mood and brain health. By taking a holistic approach to food and eating, Dr. Wiss aims to help people develop a sustainable, balanced approach to nutrition that will improve their overall health and wellbeing.
