Deavondre Jones, Founder of Dancespire, a company fusing performing arts and public speaking, is sharing his story that led him to becoming an entrepreneur and developing a passion for dance and giving back to his community.
At a young age, Jones experienced a life changing event that would lead to him developing a compassionate and empathetic lifestyle. It started one day when his mother was having an argument with her boyfriend at the time. The argument took a turn for the worst when the man pulled out a gun and began shooting inside of Deavondre’s home where his older brother was hit once in the head and the chest. Other members of Jones’ family were shot including his aunt who was pregnant at the time.
Jones began spending a lot of time on his own when he was still a child, and he developed a passion for dance by mimicking the movements that he would see in movies and online. Jones was presented with a hard decision one day when his mother told him that she was moving to a different city and he had the option to go with her or stay where he was living. Jones stayed and it was then he knew that the responsibility for his life was in his own hands. He says this created resiliency within him as he was determined even at a young age to become successful and care for his family.
One of the driving forces that has made Jones dedicate his life to helping people is a memory he has of a time he tried to correct his mother. Jones was just a child when he tried to correct his mother’s pronunciation, which caused her to leash out at him and tell him not to think he was better than her. Jones says this hurt his soul in a profound way because he was only trying to help his mother, but at the same time it inspired him to always keep working to help people no matter how they perceive it.
It made me realize that in the future I am going to help people, and a lot of the time they probably won't see it as help, and I have to still persevere, regardless, and that's the insight that I build my life on,” says Jones. “There's many people who are gonna misunderstand me whether they're in a different social class, a different economic class. In the beginning they probably won't get it, but I will always continue working to help people and help them build better lives.”
