Matthew, could you provide insight into the beginning of your content creation journey? What sparked this passion?
Since I was a kid, I was drawn to capturing moments with our old family camcorder. The idea of conveying a story, eliciting emotions, always fascinated me. When I was in high school, I got exposed to film classes and became familiar with platforms like Vine. The limited duration of Vine videos presented a unique challenge. When Vine ceased to exist, I explored avenues like TikTok and YouTube. Around 2021, I embraced content creation wholeheartedly, especially with the emergence of YouTube Shorts.
Your retainer video on Vine made waves. How did you feel about its unexpected success, and did you foresee its popularity on TikTok?
When that video went viral, I was honestly taken aback. It became clear that audiences often lean more towards content that entertains than just educates. After tasting this early success, I momentarily stepped back to prioritize college and my budding career. Revisiting TikTok later on, I decided to repost that old video, and shockingly, it resonated again with the users. This rekindled my drive for consistent content creation.
Can you give us a glimpse into the inception of your "Discount Dentist" series?
The idea germinated during the lockdown phase. I noticed an amusing trend where creators performed mock 'surgeries' on fruits, and I decided to infuse it with a dental perspective. But it wasn't just for laughs; several of my viewers mentioned that these videos alleviated their dental anxieties. As the series evolved, I felt compelled to embed LGBTQ+ supportive messages, ensuring the platform remained inclusive and uplifting.
You transitioned from your job in Georgia to concentrate solely on your series "Invisible River." What inspired this major shift?
Watching "The OA" on Netflix had a profound effect on me. Its abrupt cancellation left a void, especially given the producers' aloof attitude towards its fans. I was motivated to craft a fan continuation titled "Invisible River." The magnitude of this project eventually made me realize I had to dedicate myself entirely, prompting my departure from my job.
2020 appeared to be a defining year for you, especially with TikTok's rise. What's your counsel for those just starting?
My primary advice is to stay true to your voice. The digital space is vast, and it can be easy to feel lost. However, with clarity of purpose and genuine enthusiasm, you'll definitely stand out. Remember to remain receptive to critiques but ensure your unique flavor isn't diluted in the process.
How did you navigate the YouTube Shorts platform in 2021?
Recognizing YouTube's rich legacy, I saw YouTube Shorts as a newfound creative outlet. It presented an avenue to showcase my unique creative works, reconnect with an audience I was already familiar with, and expand my viewer base.
During this content journey, what major obstacles have you encountered?
Navigating the evolving attention spans has been a significant challenge. In order to maintain a strong connection with my viewers, I've always prioritized regular interactions with my followers, striving to understand their needs and consistently delivering content that captivates them..
With myriad platforms available, how do you strategize about where to post?
Platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat Discover are my preferred choices. They offer vast audiences and have demonstrated sustainability over the years.
How do you manage feedback, especially given the magnitude of your audience?
I ensure I go through comments regularly, extracting constructive critiques. Data analytics play a pivotal role in refining my content strategy. When things become too hectic or demanding, meditation and journaling are my sanctuaries.
Lastly, what's on the horizon for Fleeting Films?
After completing my film studies at SLCC, I ventured into acting. While digital content is my core, I'm gradually pivoting towards acting as well. I've recently secured a role in "The Witch of Wander Lane," and the excitement is palpable.
