An unfortunate reality in today's society is that conformity often prevails, and individuals are forced to suppress their innate creativity to meet societal expectations. Only a few persevere like a seed struggling to break through the hardened earth and realize that the rewards can be extraordinary. Abra McField, the founder of leading hair growth solutions provider Abra Kadabra Hair & Healing, knows this journey all too well.
The entrepreneur's success attests to the power of resilience and pursuing one's passion against all odds. Growing up in a dysfunctional household allowed Abra to discover her innate creativity. Still, as a child, she was forced to dive into sports, although she has always loved singing, dancing, and acting. Meanwhile, as a young adult, she was expected to pursue a conventional career.
However, Abra's repressed creativity bubbled to the surface, and she just knew that her true calling was in the world of hair styling, beauty, and entrepreneurship. With a newfound mission, the determined woman found herself in St Louis in 2009, where she experienced early success. Despite her relatively short time in the industry, she was selected to participate in the American reality television series on the Style Network called "Split Ends," demonstrating her talent and potential.
"I was invited to join Split Ends just one year after graduating as a hairstylist," Abra shares. "I and two other stylists from my salon swapped places with three stylists from Los Angeles for the duration of the filming. It was really an exciting and life-changing time for me because I was exposed to new challenges and clients. I was able to learn more about the beauty industry as well."
Unfortunately, Abra's building momentum in the industry didn't last long, as she had to focus on her personal life as a single mother. She made a bold decision to move to Atlanta for a fresh start, but the road was far from easy. The young entrepreneur struggled financially and faced the harsh reality of building a business in a new city. This led Abra and her young family to go back to their roots in St Louis to have a fresh start.
The move to St Louis proved to be successful in regards to establishing Abra’s own hair salon business, however, her resilience was put to the test. She battled exhaustion and the fear of failure to establish her position in the competitive beauty industry. Her perseverance paid off, and she soon gained traction for her services. This came at a cost, however, as she found herself sacrificing her health and well-being to meet the demands of her growing client base.
"I was finally achieving success again, but my health deteriorated from the stress and exhaustion of trying to do everything on my own. I was hospitalized for three months because of severe illness, and that was the point that I knew I couldn't continue neglecting my well-being for my dreams," Abra recounts. She then shifted her mindset and started her journey of healing and self-discovery.
Confronting past traumas and limiting beliefs, Abra learned to prioritize her own needs and set boundaries in her professional and personal life. She even delved into practices like meditation, adopting a plant-based diet, and prioritizing exercise to nurture her physical and mental health. This paradigm shift extended to how she now approaches her business.
The forward-thinking entrepreneur recognized the importance of a holistic approach to providing hair care services. Therefore, Abra Kadabra Hair & Healing's ethos goes beyond offering top-notch products and services. The company also made it its mission to address the broader aspects of lifestyle and health. Abra has received hundreds of testimonials that further solidify her achievements regarding her mission.
Another pivotal moment in Abra's entrepreneurial journey occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic when she realized that with her expertise and experience, she could empower other salon owners, particularly African American women, to thrive in their businesses. She developed a revenue-sharing model and online training program, showcasing her commitment to the cause.
Abra also launched digital courses and authored a book, Poor Hair Rich Hair: The Ultimate Hairstylist Guide to Building Clients, Increasing Income and Living the Lifestyle You Deserve, to share her insights and strategies for success. "As a single mother of two, I faced homelessness, but through perseverance and grabbing opportunities as they came my way, I built a successful salon brand. Now, I'm driven by a sense of duty to share my story and provide a roadmap for other cosmetologists to reach their full potential," she remarks.
Ultimately, Abra McField's story is an inspiration for anyone pursuing their dreams, regardless of the obstacles they may face. She proves that through perseverance, self-discovery, and a dedication to excellence, one can pave their own way and even empower others to obtain success. "I've evolved through all the challenges in my life, and now I've created a legacy that I hope can serve as encouragement for others," she passionately declares.
