Known to many, healthcare professionals face challenges that go beyond their job descriptions. From the intense pressure of critical care units to the emotionally taxing environments of behavioral health units, the difficulties these individuals encounter are multifaceted and often overwhelming.

Externally, healthcare professionals are confronted with disrespect and incivility on a daily basis. Disrespectful behavior has become alarmingly common, especially during high-stress situations such as emergencies and preoperative areas. Harassment and bullying in the workplace have more than doubled in recent years, with 46% of health workers reporting feeling burned out and 44% intending to seek new employment opportunities (2022 report).

Within the industry, professionals grapple with systemic issues of racism, misogyny, and discrimination. POC team members, in particular, remain severely underrepresented, highlighting the persistent inequities within the medical field. These internal challenges not only exacerbate the stress and mental strain experienced by healthcare professionals but also hinder their career advancement and overall well-being.

The United States further faces racial inequities in medical professionals, with Black physicians remaining scarce. A 2021 study by the University of California, Los Angeles revealed that the number of Black physicians in the US has only increased by 4% in the past 120 years, and as of 2023, only 5.7% of doctors identify as Black or African American.

Dr. Paula London, a Certified Whole Health Coach and a seasoned healthcare professional understands these challenges all too well. The only black female recreational therapist, with over 25 years of experience, she has faced discrimination and adversity within her career. Despite the obstacles she encountered, Dr. London persevered, using her passion for serving others as a guiding light.

Dr. London's journey from a Louisiana girl to a respected healthcare professional demonstrates her true resilience and determination. Despite encountering this bias from individuals way younger than her and hardships in her career, she never wavered in her commitment to serving others. From working in maximum-security prison settings to advocating for veterans’ care, Dr. London’s dedication to uplifting and supporting those in need is unwavering. Her experience highlights the importance of equipping healthcare professionals with the tools and support needed to navigate the complexities of their roles effectively.

Recognizing the urgent need for change, Dr. London decided to become the cheerleader for all healthcare providers - may it be doctors, nurses, caregivers, or physical therapists - and has founded Opeulent Group, LLC, to provide the much-needed support and resources to healthcare professionals. As her grandmother would say, “Even if you don’t have children, you are still responsible.” Through her expertise as a Certified Whole Health Coach and her firsthand experience overcoming challenges, Dr. London offers holistic services for those feeling overwhelmed and burnt out. “Healthcare professionals are the unsung heroes of our society, tirelessly dedicating themselves to the care and wellbeing of others. Yet, they often face unseen battles of disrespect, discrimination, and burnout. It's time we acknowledge their struggles and provide them with the support and resources they need to thrive,” expresses the recreational therapist. By offering her Calm and Centered Call, and many other services, Dr. London aims to help healthcare professionals create a plan to elevate their overall wellbeing. These personalized sessions provide clarity, vision, and actionable steps for healthcare professionals to thrive in their careers and personal lives.

“Now retired as a Rec therapist, I’ve devoted my life to serving individuals and know how the system works. Working with them was not easy. It is draining and causes a tremendous amount of stress and mental strain. A lot of my dear peers are silently quitting due to this,” shares Dr. London. In a world where healthcare professionals are quitting due to disrespect and burnout, Dr. Paula London stands as a beacon of hope. Her commitment to supporting healthcare providers is not only commendable but essential in ensuring the continued excellence of the healthcare industry. To all healthcare professionals facing challenges, Dr. Paula London offers a simple message: you are not alone, and there is a path forward.
