In the world of aviation and aerospace, professionals are often satisfied sticking to tradition. It can take decades to design, fund, and launch a successful aircraft and the certification process is also lengthy. This explains the industry’s preference for upholding proven methods of air travel. However, innovation is necessary for any sector to competitively serve consumers. For Charles Luffman, he realized this fact throughout his 50+ years in the aviation and airship industries. Since recognizing the need for newer, more cutting-edge solutions, Charles aims to use his company LuffShips Limited. (LSL) as a vehicle for change.
Born and raised in the UK, Charles Luffman had an early interest in design, particularly architecture. Through his father’s military service, Charles became fascinated with aeronautical engineering. He undertook a university program in this, building his theoretical knowledge until he secured an apprenticeship post-graduation. In the early years of his career, Charles wasn’t dreaming of novel solutions. He was mainly working with conventional aircraft and overseeing structural design along with a variety of other duties.
After his first employer unexpectedly ended operations in the UK, Charles found work in several industries outside of aviation. It wasn’t until a few years later that he entered the airship industry by chance. The small company Charles joined was developing airships, a relatively new concept in aviation. The allure of emerging technology deeply inspired Charles to commit himself to engineering excellence. At this employer, he rose the ranks quickly, becoming Chief Stress Engineer and later Head of Structures. Some of Charles’ most admirable achievements there included supporting the certification of multiple airships designed, some designed for the US military, and successfully proving a 75-tonne payload balloon.
Although Charles was working for an airship manufacturer, he quickly realized how skeptical individuals were about their applications. While industry experts acknowledged airships’ unique ability to fly at with minimal sound and fuel consumption, they were concerned about its viability compared to faster alternatives. Frustrated with these misconceptions and problems with traditional airship designs, Charles acquired LuffShips LSL, an aircraft provider. With this step, he was determined to use his proprietary designs to create some of the first omnidirectional airships. The company, LuffShips LSL. has a talented team of buoyant aircraft experts dedicated to disrupting the industry.
“Throughout my career in the aviation and airship industries, I have encountered many setbacks when trying to implement change,” Charles says. “When speaking about airships specifically, many professionals dismiss the viability of these products because of previous mishaps. Since there are few players–and none in the transport category–I believe that LuffShips LSL. can introduce revolutionary airships that can introduce capabilities that don’t exist with conventional aircraft.”
Air travel has transformed significantly since Charles began designing and developing aircraft. He imagines the space will undergo more changes as sustainability concerns peak. In the coming years, he anticipates finalizing the designs for multiple omnidirectional airships. As he reaches this milestone, Charles hopes to attract more partners and investors that enable LuffShips LSL. to provide a new market solution that will continue to grow.
