An established and well-regarded team of travel experts, Baltic Travel Company, has noted the scale and scope of changes to demand from travellers looking for holidays and experiences that stand out from the norm, bucking long-standing trends where a large proportion of British holidaymakers would head to the same Mediterranean countries every summer.

The Baltic Travel Company, which offers customised travel to locations in the Nordics, Scandinavia, the Baltics, the Arctic region, the Balkans, and Eastern Europe, suggests that greater interest in non-generic travel, protests against mass tourism, higher travel and accommodation costs, and the appeal of cultural destinations off the beaten track have all contributed to changing consumer priorities.

Data and Statistics Reflecting Changing Travel Norms

The shifts in expectations and drops in demand for conventional summer sun holidays to heavily crowded coastal areas in Western Europe are not exclusive to British travellers, nor do they only apply to more affluent demographics. A study conducted by Mabrian Technologies found that:

  • Experiential travel—where visitors look for unique and location-specific experiences rather than picking holiday destinations based on access to a beach or the weather—has increased as a subsegment by 8% globally over the last five years.

  • Holidays focused on wellness, sporting activities, nature and dining have also grown in appeal, in contrast to declines in tourism centred around nightlife or retail.

  • Active holidays and those based around nature are the fastest-growing types of overseas trips, with interest increasing 5% and 3%, respectively, and 27% of travellers choosing destinations due to the local culture.

  • Regions in Northern Europe have seen the biggest benefit from evolving consumer appetites, with countries including Finland and Norway having a considerable 60% share of the active tourism market due to the natural landscapes and scenery they are known for.

Separate research from the flight comparison site Skyscanner has similar findings, noting that 54% of all customers consider culture when choosing where to go on holiday, whereas as many as 11% of international travellers have selected a destination based on a specific restaurant.

Holidays incorporating unique experiences, cultural festivals, access to rare and endangered wildlife, and breaks to see natural phenomena, such as the Northern Lights, are equally seeing upticks in demand, with booking volumes increasing year on year.

Catering to Demand for Unusual and Bucket List Holiday Experiences

Birthe Nielsen, Managing Director at the Baltic Travel Company, says, ‘We have long been passionate about travel and helping our guests explore some of the most remote, wild, and special landscapes on the planet, whether hiking across glaciers, relaxing on a luxury Arctic cruise ship, watching whales and dolphins, or experiencing Christmas and New Year's amid incredible architecture.

The changes in demand have been subtle but sustained. While we have always worked with frequent travellers, adventurous guests, and families looking for active, outdoor-based holidays, we're also seeing enormous increases in demand from new clients who have become tired of repeating the same holiday year after year.

Most people have one or potentially two overseas holidays per year, making this time incredibly valuable, and a week or two when couples, friends and families can connect and share authentic experiences—something hard to achieve when typical holidays involve long queues and overcrowding, and in some countries, contention about the impacts overtourism is having on local economies.

It has been wonderful to see such renewed excitement and interest in unconventional holidays and experiences and it is a privilege to help guests arrange unforgettable and once-in-a-lifetime breaks with packages that span ice hotels in the Nordics to wildlife watching in the Arctic Circle.’

The company provides varied packages to non-mainstream travel destinations, including specialist holidays and schedules for guests looking to see the Aurora Borealis, visit the best Christmas markets and festive destinations, and try sporting or wellness holidays such as skiing, golfing or spa trips.

It also provides tailored excursions, ranging from solo travel tours to weddings, group travel and family-friendly holidays, with all packages published through the firm’s website and with detailed pricing, inclusions and itineraries.
