The Center for Disease Control estimates that 600,000 lives are lost each year to heart-related conditions in the United Sates. According to the American Heart Association, one out of every three women will die from heart disease or stroke. While these numbers are staggering, AHA also says that “80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes.”
To Dr. Carey Nease, board-certified cosmetic surgeon and partner at Southern Surgical Arts, the task of raising awareness is bigger than just putting a name or logo behind the cause. “Being in the practice of cosmetic-surgery, most of our patients are women,” he said. “With proper information and preventive medical care, they can minimize their risk.” Both Nease and his surgical partner Dr. Chad Deal, wanted to go above and beyond the “norm” in championing the cause. In January and February, the practice has contributed more than $30,000 toward a city-wide advertising campaign, and has even created its own event, IgniteRED, to be held on National Wear Red Day, February 6, 2015. The IgniteRED event is a special invitation-only gathering to bring together many of the city’s female civic leaders, executives, and philanthropists in order to educate, inform and collaborate on ideas to collectively effect the trend in this epidemic.
Additionally, SSA will be lending support to the American Heart Association by sponsoring its 2015 Go Red for Women Luncheon & Heart Ball. And for every breast procedure performed during National Heart Month in February, Southern Surgical Arts will donate $100 to the American Heart Association. Altogether, the Chattanooga-based cosmetic surgery practice has committed more than $50,000 to aid in the mission of “shattering the silence” about heart disease.
“By spreading awareness, and encouraging both our patients and women everywhere to get the facts, get their numbers, and know their risk, we believe we can make a difference,” said Dr. Chad Deal, board-certified cosmetic surgeon and partner at Southern Surgical Arts. “If you just take time to look at the facts, potentially every person stands to lose someone in their inner circle to heart-related issues.”
